杜克大学创建于1838年，是一所私立的研究型大学。杜克大学前身为三一学院。2013~2014年《美国新闻与世界报道》将杜克大学列为全美第 7，与麻省理工学院和宾夕法尼亚大学并列。杜克大学图书馆藏书量列全美大学第3，仅次于哈佛和耶鲁。不同于其它顶尖的学术大学，杜克大学的体育，尤其是篮 球十分有名并且是美国最佳的篮球名校。其男篮主教练老K教练因在NCAA出色的战绩，也同时被聘为美国男篮主教练。

杜克大学于1838年创建，开始为布朗的校舍，属于布朗学院的一个分校，位于伦道夫县(三位一体镇)，由教士Brantley York所领导的循道宗信徒和贵格会信徒所管理。
